Five games remain in the District 29-5A baseball season.
Barring unforeseen circumstances, the district's four playoff representatives will likely be, in order, United, Eagle Pass, Alexander and Southwest.
Every one of those teams is deep and solid in pitching. United has the most balanced offensive lineup, and Alexander is likely the quickest and most talented.
I will have a story running in tomorrow's paper about the district and each team's outlook going into this week.
Among the notable storylines is United's four-game road trip, where it will have 18 days between home games, and Alexander's four-game winning streak.
The district is tough. Martin and Del Rio may very well each finish at .500 or better and still not qualify for the postseason.
Talk about tough luck.
Here are some numbers:
- United has three players batting .400 or better (A.J. Gomez, Stevie Rincon and Andrew Aguilar). Luis Pollorena is 7-2 as a pitcher with an ERA under 1.00. Homero Ortiz is 7-1 with an ERA under 3.50.
- Alexander has three players batting .333 or better (Robert Lopez, Richie Ortiz and Erick Martinez).
- Martin's Charlie Cruz is the Tigers' top hitter at .370. Senior Danny Gonzalez is 6-3 as a pitcher.
