I was pretty pleased to learn earlier this week that another Laredo athlete will be taking their talents to the next level.
Martin senior Jerry Delgado, who played five positions for the Tigers football team, signed with Mayville State last week.
Mayville is an NAIA school, and he will be awarded an athletic scholarship.
Delgado is a humble and tough kid, always playing hurt and willing to accept any role on the team.
The last two years he played wingback and quarterback exclusively and was a punishing runner. He's quick and mobile and has good size (5-foot-11).
Here's the story that ran on his signing today
============================================
Martin senior Jerry Delgado is taking his talents to the next level.
The 5-foot-11, 185-pound gridiron standout signed with NAIA Mayville State University last week.
Delgado is expected to play cornerback for the Comets.
In a press release, Mayville State assistant head football coach/defensive coordinator Derek Schieve stated that he was impressed with Delgado's intelligence, toughness and physical ability.
"Jerry made the first step in signing with us and being tough enough to leave home to better himself," Schieve said.
"With the quality of athletes at Martin, and the coaching they receive, it's easy to see why we would like to start getting some of their players every year."
Delgado plans to major in business at Mayville State, which is located in North Dakota.
He played cornerback, safety, wingback and quarterback during his career for the Tigers.
Last season, he was second on the team in rushing with 240 yards and a touchdown off 52 carries.
He was named to the Texas High School Coaches' Association all-academic second team and the 29-5A all-district second team.
"We're happy for him," Martin coach Don Davis said.
"It's obvious he's a very talented player.
The most impressive thing to me is his toughness. He's generally very quiet,
he's in action, he's tough. I wish I had had several of him."
Delgado will be joining another fellow Martin standout at Mayville State in junior Tori Kowalski, who plays basketball.
Tori's father, Stan, is an assistant on the Martin football coaching staff and was responsible for getting his alma mater interested in Delgado.
The 2008-09 sports year has so far been a typically quiet one in regard to local prep standouts inking deals to play at the next level.
Some of the recent ones have been LCC's signing of Alexander volleyball standout Kassy Santos, and TAMIU's inking of United golf standout Victoria Young.
Davis said recruiters generally want to know two things before looking at a Laredo athlete - their SAT scores and the geography of the college in relation to Laredo.
"Laredo is generally an unknown quantity for recruiters," Davis said.
"We're way off the beaten path, and I think recruiters have had disappointment with Laredo kids wanting to come back home and not wanting to stick it out.
"It's a big pond with a lot of fish out there, but Jerry's an example of one of those kids who wants to see what he's capable of."
