A look at Friday's night Week 4 Laredo high school football games. District play for 31-4A and 29-5A kicks off tonight.
United South (1-2) vs. United (1-2)
Where: at the SAC, 7:30 p.m.
Last year: United defeated South, 39-17, in the 2008 district opener.
Key players: For South, QB Danny Salazar (57-88, 673 yards, 6 TDs-3 INTs), RB Gilbert Galindo (31-196-1), WR Amado de la Fuente (17-204-1), WR Jerry Gonzalez (19-216-2), LB Gaspar Garcia (13 tackles, 1 sack, 1 fumble caused), LB Angel Cardenas (25 tackles), DB Julian Diaz-lolar (21 tackles), DB Raul Holguin (17 tackles, 1 fumble caused, 1 fumble recovery).
For United, QB Tony Salas (84-144, 985 yards, 8 TDs-3 INTs), WR Rick Velasquez (19-380-4), WR Sergio Ramos (22-233-1), WR Joe Cardenas (17-142-2), LB Derek Hale (22 tackles), LB Andrew Ferdin (16 tackles), DB Josh Swishher (16 tackles).
What to expect: Both teams run the spread offense very well, so expect a lot of passing and scoring. The Panthers (15.3 ppg, 15 pts. allowed) will be looking for revenge from last year’s contest, and the Longhorns (26 ppg, 27.7 pts. allowed) feel they are one of the teams to beat in District 29-5A.
They would like nothing more than to prove that tonight.
Alexander (0-3) at Del Rio (2-1)
Where: at Del Rio, 7:30 p.m.
Last year: Del Rio routed Alexander, 42-24, in Laredo in each team’s 2008 district opener.
Key Players: For Alexander, QB Brian Swain (55-122, 632 yards, 4 TDs-2 INTs), WR Ferny Garza (10-198-2), WR Daniel Ramos (10-127), WR R.J. Aguero (17-163-2), DB Oscar Cabello (23 tackles), DB Christian Lopez (22 tackles), DL Jesus Villarreal (12 tackles, 1.0 sack, 1 fumble recovery).
For Del Rio, QB Parker Hanson (8-16, 211 yards, 1 TD), RB Josh Washington (57-480-8), RB John Steed (21-115), WR Cody Brooks (4-113).
What to expect: The Rams (24.6 ppg, 8 pts. allowed) have allowed just 24 total points in three games this season. They pride themselves on defense and a strong running game (247 rushing yards per game) to control the clock.
It will be a clash of styles as Alexander (16.3 ppg, 31.7 pts. allowed) employs a spread offense and relies heavily on a short passing game with a young quarterback under center.
Southwest (2-0) at Martin (2-1)
Where: at Krueger Field, 7:30 p.m.
Last year: Southwest topped Martin, 41-14, in each team’s 2008 district opener.
Key Players: For Martin, QB Luis Diaz-DeLeon (32-150-2), TB Jose Hernandez (23-184-4), TB Robert Barajas (13-133-1), LB Jose Ramirez (10 tackles, 1 INT), DE Salvador Rodriguez (7 tackles, 2.0 sacks), LB Tony Torres (7 tackles, 1 INT).
For Southwest, RB Trevion Johnson, FB Adrian Guerra, TE Herbert Gonzalez, DB Steven Lacivita, LB Markell Thomas.
What to expect: The Dragons (25 ppg, 18.5 pts. allowed), who many projected to repeat as 29-5A champions this season, have cruised for most of the season, with their most significant win coming against 4A power Steele. Led by Johnson’s superb explosiveness, they employ a ground attack to accompany an athletic defense.
The Tigers (24 ppg, 16 pts. allowed), too, have ran the ball successfully this season, so expect a low-scoring affair as two running teams look to grind it out.
LBJ (1-2) at Tuloso-Midway (3-0)
Where: at Corpus Christi, 7:30 p.m.
Last year: Tuloso-Midway shut out LBJ, 44-0, in Laredo in each team’s 2008 district opener.
Key Players: For LBJ, QB Guillermo Claudio, RB Ricky Flores, WR Edwin Adame, LB Rigoberto Mata.
For Tuloso-Midway, QB Eric Alvarez (34-52, 334 yards, 4 TDs-1 INT), RB Ryan Vasquez (35-148-2), RB Alfredo Hernandez (33-155-2), WR Ryan Wilcox (15-192-3).
What to expect: The Warriors (26.7 ppg, 12.7 pts. allowed) have held foes to 12 points per game and rely on a strong, power running game that accounts for 171 yards per game, though they can also throw the ball when needed (65.4 completion rate on 17 pass attempts per game).
LBJ (11.3 ppg, 21.7 pts. allowed) also relies on its running attack, but must also balance its offense with a timely passing game.

Weekly high school football update
It's Week 3 of the high school football season. All but one team has a bye this week. That team is Martin, which travels to Roma for a game on Friday.
Here are current standings for the Laredo teams: the Tigers are 2-0, followed by United South (1-2), LBJ (1-2), United (1-2), Alexander (0-3), Nixon (0-3) and Cigarroa (0-3).
Here's a brief look at all seven clubs to this point of the season:
Martin: The Tigers ground game has been outstanding. Martin averages 325 yards per game on seven yards per carry. The defense has been solid, thanks to a new aggressive scheme under defensive coordinator Lamar Rodriguez. The Tigers also have a legit passing threat (!) in junior QB Luis Diaz-DeLeon, who has completed 3-of-4 passes this season for 50 yards. Overall, the Tigers have attempted seven passes this season, completing four, as they have tried to vary their offensive attack, slowly but surely.
United South: The Panthers' offense has progressed with each week, but its the defense that has been outstanding. The South 'D' has amassed eight sacks in three games, along with three interceptions and three fumble recoveries. South is a team to look out for, especially as senior QB Danny Salazar becomes more confident and aggressive under center.
LBJ: The Wolves have been solid this season, thanks to a hard-hitting defense a potent ground game led by junior RB Ricky Flores. LBJ is still counting on its QB duo of Memo Claudio and Juan Perez to develop and gain some confidence to spice up the offense a bit, but for now, the club is fine with its ball-control offense and young, spunky defense.
United: The Longhorns could very well be 2-1. Their last lost, a 14-point defeat to Alamo Heights, came without star DB Josh Garcia and starting TB Chris Martinez. Otherwise, however, QB Tony Salas has played spectacularly, as expected, and a group of young receivers have stepped up to provide sound depth and athleticism. The Longhorns are still a district title contender.
Alexander: The Bulldogs' offense has improved considerably with each week, thanks to the emergence of young playmaking QB Brian Swain, just a sophomore. Swain and WRs Ferny Garza and R.J. Aguero have emerged as vital cogs to head coach Joel Lopez's spread offense, and the defense is still taking shape after a tough non-district schedule against the likes of Corpus Christi Carroll, San Antonio O'Connor and Donna.
Nixon/Cigarroa: Yes, both teams are grouped together simply because one bug has bothered both immensely: injuries. The Mustangs had 17 injured players entering this week, including nine starters, and the Toros have been without starters at LB, QB, RB and DB all season long. Both teams are young, but it's tough to get a true feel on any as injuries have doomed them since Week 0.
Here are current standings for the Laredo teams: the Tigers are 2-0, followed by United South (1-2), LBJ (1-2), United (1-2), Alexander (0-3), Nixon (0-3) and Cigarroa (0-3).

Week 1 Laredo/area football scores
S.A. O'Connor 49, Alexander 21: The Alexander Bulldogs took a couple of steps backward on Friday night, falling to 0-2 on the young season by way of a 49-21 loss to San Antonio O’Connor. The Panthers compiled 402 total yards and employed a dynamic running attack, led by the trio of senior tailback Jerreal Minor and sophomore backs Hasem Ali and Darryle Surney. Minor tallied 143 yards and three touchdowns off 24 carries. Ali added 41 yards off seven carries, and Surney also had 38 and a touchdown off eight. Offensively, Alexander did establish a consistent running game, something it did not do against Corpus Christi Carroll in its Week 0 loss, but it was not nearly enough. The Bulldogs rushed for 102 yards on 21 carries and got effective performances from sophomore quarterback Brian Swain and Erick Martinez. Under center, Swain started strong but faltered late, misfiring on 10 of his final 11 passes of the night to finish with 192 yards and two touchdowns on 16-of-36 passing. Receiver Ferny Garza was the Bulldogs’ lone other offensive highlight. He caught four passes for 99 yards and a touchdown.
United 34, Corpus Christi Ray 15: The Longhorns (1-1) used a 24-point second quarter to defeat the Texans (0-2) in Corpus Christi. Quarterback Tony Salas (23-45 passing, 298 yards) passed for three touchdowns and ran for one, with three of those scores coming in the second. Joe Cardenas, Sergio Ramos (9 receptions, 133 yards) and Rick Velasquez had United’s touchdown receptions. Chris Martinez ran for 63 yards on nine carries. Luis Navarro was successful in all four extra-point attempts and kicked two field goals, one for 27 yards in the second quarter and one for 42 in the third.
S.A. Johnson 70, Cigarroa 0: Johnson relied on a senior-laden club that amassed 459 total yards against a young and inexperienced Toros’ team that totaled 48 yards. Cigarroa quarterback Juan Ramirez passed for 13 yards and completed three of his 11 attempts, two of which were intercepted. Sam Macias was the Toros’ workhorse for the first three quarters before having to leave the game due to a blow to the head. He could only muster 15 yards on 13 carries.
Tuloso-Midway 29, United South 18: The Panthers (0-2) fell to the Warriors (1-1) in Corpus Christi. Amado de la Fuente scored two of South’s touchdowns on passing plays of 40 and five yards from quarterback Danny Salazar. Jaime Saldaña had the Panthers’ other score on a 28-yard reception. Salazar was 21-of-36 passing for 329 yards, three touchdowns and one interception. De La Fuente (five receptions, 85 yards), Jaime Saldana (five receptions, 82 yards) and Ricky Esqueda (four receptions, 87 yards) also starred for the Panthers, who totaled 348 yards to the Warriors' 218.
LBJ 28, Zapata 7: Second-year LBJ head coach Oscar Villaseñor finally got the experience that eluded him, his staff and players last season, as he watched his Wolves defeat the Zapata Hawks, 28-7, for their first victory since 2007. The victory erases a 11-game losing streak and provides the confidence boost and moral builder that the program desperately needed. The Wolves’ last victory came at the end of the 2007 season, when they defeated C.C. Winn at Eagle Pass. Their last victory in Laredo was a 27-19 district win over Alexander on Oct. 6, 2005. The Wolves’ defense had a huge game, forcing eight turnovers. Offensively, senior quarterback Memo Claudio was tabbed the starter, and he showed flashes as to why Villaseñor has entrusted him with the offensive reins. He finished with 185 yards and three touchdowns on 5-of-10 passing, with one interception. On the ground, the heavy lifting was provided by junior Ricky Flores, who carried the ball 10 times for 61 yards and one touchdown and added another score via the air with a 27-yard catch-and-run. The Wolves finished with 264 yards of total offense to the Hawks’ 227. Zapata’s main weapons on offense were the running duo of quarterback Manuel Salinas, with 28 yards on 10 carries, and Juan Martinez, who totaled 40 on six. Zapata’s only touchdown was a 5-yard run by Carlos Gonzalez early in the opening quarter.
Corpus Christi Carroll 59, Nixon 0: The Mustangs fell to 0-2 on the season as Carroll improved to 2-0. Five Mustangs, all starters, left the game due to injury, including starting quarterback Manuel Martinez, who had a shoulder bruise. Two receivers also left the game because of ankle sprains. Nixon coach Brad Hopkins said Carroll’s offensive line and running backs dominated the game.
Hebbronville 26, Falfurrias 6: The Longhorns (1-1) picked up their first win of the season, defeating the Bulls (0-2) on the road.
Bruni 14, Woodsboro 12: The Badgers (1-0) won their first full game of the season, beating the Eagles (1-1) on the road after having their Week 0 game cut short due to rain.
