Week 4 touchdowns
Here's the game story.
And here are previews for tonight's games, for 31-4A and 29-5A.
McKinnon out indefinitely
The junior tailback leads District 29-5A in rushing with more than 700 yards and seven touchdowns in three games.
Until his eligibility matters are resolved, McKinnon can only play on the junior varsity level.

Kicking off 29-5A
Tonight's matchup of United vs. South opens the District 29-5A season at the SAC. The Panthers enter the game 2-1, while the Longhorns are 0-3.
South is the district's second-best offensive club at 28.3 points per game. United's defense has been strong all season with the exception of its 52 point allowance to Alamo Heights in Week 2.
We'll see two of the top three passers in 29-5A as United's Tony Salas (60-111, 777 yards, six TDs) and South's David Garza (63-115, 899, 4 TDs) square off.
The game also features a "teacher versus student" theme, with United coach David Sanchez going against his former offensive coordinator in Jose Briones.
For a United win, the Longhorns must pressure Garza, hit him hard and attack him at every opportunity. They also have to locate receiver Juan Zavala and minimize the big plays.
For South, it must do the same thing to Salas, a sophomore. Attack him, hit him, get in his head and be in his face on every down. They also have to locate United's receivers and take away the big threats in A.J. Gomez and Stefan Luis Rincon. Make Roger Rueweler beat them, which Rueweler can, but he's relatively inexperienced at the tailback spot.
Either way, it promises to be an exciting game.

South continues to roll
The Panthers look to be up and running with ease through the early season, compiling a 2-1 record heading into district play in two weeks.
Here's the game story from last night.
The Panthers' two wins have been by 20 and 24 points, respectively.
The Cigarroa-Martin football game is still on for tonight.
Here's the preview for that game.

Ike takes an early toll on Laredo preps
For football, the only two canceled games are Nixon vs. C.C. Winn and Alexander vs. Donna.
In other prep news, here's a feature on St. Augustine volleyball, and here's a preview for tonight's football games, United vs. San Antonio Alamo Heights and South vs. LBJ.
Cruz out for good
Carlos Cruz is out for the season and will not return to the field this year. Cruz was told by doctors that another hit could damage the knee worse since there is no cartilage damage.

Football Fun
No Laredo school pulled out a win this week. In 29-5A, only C.C. Winn won as it defeated Crystal City. Martin and Eagle Pass were off.
But that's not even the important news.
The big news is the injury Cigarroa senior QB Carlos Cruz suffered against San Antonio Johnson on Friday.
Cruz took a big hit to his left knee in the third quarter and was removed from the game. He had a MRI on Saturday and the results are supposed to be known on Tuesday.
But early indication is that it doesn't look good. Early reports I'm getting is that it's a torn ACL.
We'll see. I surely hope not because Cruz is a stud football player and he does not deserve to end his high school career like this.
Be sure to stay tuned here as I'll give the latest updates.
With that said, here are my other thoughts from Week 1:
* United sophomore QB Tony Salas has been impressive. He has a great arm and is calm and poised. He tends to try and do too much at times, but that's what happens with young players. But he's got great vision at the position and when coach David Sanchez expresses so much confidence in a player, you know he's a good one.
* I'm still not thrilled by Alexander's defense. The Bulldogs say they're not concerned and that they like how aggressive and focused the unit is. But the stats speak for themselves: 38 points per game allowed so far this season. They struggle mightily against the run.
* Either coach Jose Briones is only using about 30 percent of his offense, or the South kids are brilliant gridiron players. The Panthers seem to have great control over the spread offense so early in the season. Coming from a team that was a power option team the last few years, this is surprising. But they have a great quarterback in senior David Garza, and Juan Zavala is a star receiver and playmaker. Once that defense tightens up a bit more, look out.
* It'll be interesting to see how Cigarroa responds due to the loss of Cruz. This is a valiant and mentally tough team, but it's only human nature to drop in morale once your leader goes down twice in as many years.
* The LBJ Wolves have struggled early but they seem to have something going with the tandem of Arnold Garay and Gerardo Cruz. There's a lot of potential with that duo, but it appears there's not too many offensive options around them.
South falls to Tuloso-Midway
With their former coach leading the charge against them, United South put on a dynamic aerial show and late rally but still fell short against Corpus Christi Tuloso-Midway, 38-21, in a non-district game at the SAC on Saturday night.
The Warriors, of District 31-4A, improved to 2-0 as the Panthers fell to 1-1.
“Tuloso-Midway did a great job of being consistent and converting the big third downs,” Panthers coach Jose Briones said. “They were the better team tonight and all we can do is learn from it and move on.”
The Warriors, now coached by Joe Sendejar after he resigned from his South position in January, jumped out to a 35-7 lead with 8:12 remaining in the third quarter by using the same formula the Panthers had employed in the previous three years under Sendejar’s reign – run, run, run and run some more.
Tuloso-Midway countered South’s 323 passing yards, many of which came with flare and style, with its 276 rushing yards.
“It was like seeing the old us out there, with that old-school style of running game,” senior Panthers quarterback David Garza said. ‘It was fun playing Coach and they gave us a good game.
“Hat’s off to them.”
The Warriors totaled 419 yards and were led by Jacob Ferguson (10 carries, 118 yards) and Velasquez (five receptions, 101 yards).
Tuloso-Midway tallied eight penalties for 55 yards to South’s one for 15.
“I’m proud of the guys,” Briones said. “They fought hard and never gave up.
“Our next game is LBJ (on Friday at the SAC) and that’s the most important game right now so that we can get some momentum going into that first district ballgame.”

Late Friday Night Football
Corpus Christi Ray 25, United 19: Ray topped United in OT on QB O.J. Sanchez's 1-yard run. The Longhorns led 12-0 heading into the fourth quarter before the Texans outscored them 25-7 the rest of the way. Sanchez, who entered the game late in the third quarter for starter Will Moffitt, threw for two TDs and rushed for two of his own. Sophomore QB Tony Salas compled 28 of 49 passes for 368 yards and 2 TDs for United. But he threw for three interceptions and was sacked three times in the second half, allowing Ray momentum for a rally.
S.A. Johnson 22, Cigarroa 6: Johnson forces six turnovers to get its first win of its varsity football program. The Toros' Carlos Cruz scored on an 11-yard run in the second period before succumbing to injury.
C.C. Carroll 63, Nixon 14: Special teams allowed Carroll to pull away with a win. In the first half, Carroll had two blocked punts - one for a safety - and a forced fumble on another punt attempt. It also had a kickoff return for a score. The Tigers led 54-0 before Nixon outscored them 14-9 in the fourth quarter. 6-2, 215-pound back Anthony Davis had three TDs for Carroll. Nixon scored on a fumble return by Chris Camarillo, and a 43-yard scoring reception by Luis Rodriguez.
Zapata 34, LBJ 14
If I can find notes and tidbits to add from each game, I will. So stay tuned.

Mid-week Football Talk
By the amount of hits and comments it's received so far, it seems like more than a few of y'all have already gotten your hands on this year's first edition.
In today's paper, here's a story on United's sweep of LBJ in volleyball, as well as a roundup of other local games in Tuesday's volleyball action.
A few key notes to remember as Week 1 of football comes upon us:
- Martin is off this week. It will play Cigarroa next week at Shirley Field as Laredo's top two teams in regard to physicality match up against each other.
- Alexander travels to play San Antonio O'Connor on Thursday. O'Connor is ranked No. 10 in Class 5A by the SA Express-News. O'Connor fell to No.4 Madison last week, 35-28.
- Nixon is at Corpus Christi Carroll this week as they visit the Tigers on Friday. If we learned anything from how Carroll rolled Alexander last week, it's that the Mustangs will have to key in on senior back Anthony Davis. Davis rushed for 192 yards and four touchdowns against the Bulldogs, who are taller and bigger than the Mustangs defensively.
- Cigarroa plays at San Antonio Johnson this week. Johnson is a first-year program that drew many of its players from Reagan. Coach Ron Mittimann is originally from Madison, and he brought his offensive and defensive coordinators from that school with him to Johnson. Johnson has an enrollment of 2,086.
- Zapata hosts LBJ this week as the Wolves make the 50-mile trip to Zapata on Friday.
